In our NorSC meeting this week we discussed Global Game Jam 2020. This is a global games hackathon that takes places at sites around the world (in 100+ countries). We ran a site here at Northumbria, with about 40 staff, students and alumni in attendance. We produced seven games over the 48 hours. More information about the games is available here: https://northumbriaggj.github.io/
There are many connections between games development and HCI. For example, Christina Vasiliou used methods from improv theatre and design to lead ideation and brainstorming at the start of the event.
In future years we’d like to bring more of a design focus to the event, where we concentrate not just on programming games, but also think about board games, mixed media and other possibilities. Bringing in more critical perspectives to making should also be positive for the event.
