At the tail end of last month Shaun, Tom and Gavin attended the Emoticon Network Conference 2018. The conference took place at HereEast, a development on London’s Olympic Park site as part of the regeneration and development in the Stratford area, where Loughborough University have a campus. The Emoticon Network was formed after a UK Research Council funding ‘sandpit’ as a means to connect the funded projects. Members of NorSC are associated with two of these projects, CuRAtOR: Challenging online fear and othering and LiDA: Loneliness in the Digital Age.
Having both been funded in 2014/15, these three year projects are beginning to draw to a close, so the 2018 Emoticon Network Conference provided an opportunity for those project members from NorSC and those from other projects to hear about each others work. It was also an opportunity for fellow Northumbria researcher Cally Gatehouse to discuss her Emoticon Network funded mini-project exploring hate-crime reporting, soon to be presented at CHI 2018 conference in Montreal.
